Meet the new GM, same as the old GM

The good news: Pierre Gauthier met with Plekanec’s agent to talk about Pleks’s future in Montreal.

Deal or no deal

Mike Brophy of sportsnet.ca, on what the Habs might do at this year’s trade deadline:

The Habs underwent a major turnover in personnel in the summer, but it did not result in the team becoming more competitive. As a result, the Canadiens remain a work in progress. Ex-GM Bob Gainey made it his mission to not negotiate contracts with impending UFAs, or trade them for that matter, and it cost his team three valuable assets in Sheldon Souray, Mark Streit, and Mike Komisarek. It will be interesting to see what Gauthier does with Plekanec, a good player who wants to be paid like a star. Expect Gauthier to be active just to put his stamp on the team.

More Trade Rumors

Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period says the Habs are the center of more trade rumors. Urgent needs, according to Pagnotta, are a top-six forward and help for the D corps.

While it’s certainly reasonable to assume that Gauthier wants to upgrade the team’s absolutely pitiful blue line, he’d have to shed salary to make it work under the cap. As for top-six forwards, don’t we already have a logjam at that position? Between Gomez, Cammalleri, the Kostitsyns, Plekanec, Pouliot, and Gionta, we already have more than enough scoring punch upfront. If, however, we could acquire a big, physical top-six forward capable of playing effective hockey below the hash marks…

Stop me, I’m dreaming.
