Trade freeze ends at midnight

Less than four hours until the trade freeze is lifted and NHL teams are free to wheel and deal until 3:00 pm on March 3.

I for one am hoping that Gauthier doesn’t go shopping. Giving up a pick for a journeyman like Moore was bad enough. I’m terrified that Gauthier will mortgage even more of our future just to ensure we make the playoffs at 8th spot, only to be bounced in four straight by whichever division leader we happen to face. And Team Mediocrity will continue on its way for years to come.

On the other hand, if we’re not able to get Plekanec re-signed by the trade deadline, I’m all for trading him for as many draft picks as we can get. His value will never be higher than it is now, and with or without him, we’re not making any postseason noise this year anyway. If Dominic frickin Moore fetches a second-rounder, Plekanec has to be worth a first-rounder and a second-rounder at the very least.

If I had my druthers, we’d be sellers at this year’s deadline. Time to admit that Bob Gainey’s attempt at a rebuild has been a colossal failure.
